BAPC Partners with State for Parent Up Booster Campaign

Parent_Up_logoThrough October 15th, the Brattleboro Area Prevention Coalition (BAPC), in partnership with the Vermont Department of Health and the Parent Up Campaign, will reach out to parents of high school and middle school students in an effort to reduce underage drinking.

Following a succesful campaign in the spring of 2010, the booster campaign will continue raising awareness and providing tools and information to empower parents to talk to their children about the dangers of underage drinking. BAPC’s Director, Beth Shrader explained, “the Parent Up campaign was very well received by parents this spring in the Brattleboro area. The high school campaign postcard really resonated with parents in our community.” The card depicted teens enjoying a bonfire party and a mother relaxing in an armchair in slippers, with the tagline “You can’t be everywhere with your teen.”  This card and other resources will be distributed to parents in the Brattleboro area this fall.

Parents are encouraged to talk with their teen and set clear rules and consequences, limit their teen's access to alcohol and refuse to host underage drinking parties. In addition, BAPC will ask parents to sign a pledge in support of reducing underage drinking. The campaign is supported by a comprehensive website, www.parentupvt.org, where parents can find a wide range of helpful information, including community support resources and tips on how to connect with their kids on this important subject. Shrader said she hopes parents will visit the Parent Up and BAPC websites and access materials about talking with their middle schoolers. “Parent involvement in their children's lives is a prevention strategy recommended for all risky behaviors, including alcohol use,” Shrader said.

For more information on the prevention of underage drinking go to www.parentupvt.org and www.brattleboroareapreventioncoalition.org.

The BAPC’s mission is to develop and implement a comprehensive community effort resulting in the ongoing prevention and reduction of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse in the Windham Southeast area. Addressing Underage Drinking

Why 21 logoAs the debate continues about the legal drinking age in the U.S. and around the world, it is important to recognize arguments based on myth and learn the facts. See www.why21.org to learn more.

BAPC Launches Marijuana Education Campaign

On July 12th, Brattleboro Area Prevention Coalition (BAPC)  launched an educational campaign to inform young adults about the health and legal risks of using marijuana. Through the campaign, “duh – did you hear the blunt truth about smoking pot,” BAPC hopes to address the high percentage of Marijuana use among young adults in the community. In fact, Vermont has the highest overall rate of marijuana use in the past year among 18-25 year olds in the country at 41.9%; and among the same group, Vermont ranks 2nd in the country for rate of individuals who meet the criteria for illicit drug dependence in the past year.

BAPC in the Key Bank Window for July

hpim0452The Coalition would like to thank the Brattleboro Branch of Key Bank for offering us their Main Street display window for the month of July. At the last moment, Intern Katie Webster took the lead in creating an effective display that highlights our "Parents Who Host Lose the Most" underage drinking campaign.
